UNIT Set To Reopen After Refurb

1

UNIT will be reopening its doors this Friday (28th February), marking the launch of Lose Your Head, a new clubnight set to take place  every Friday at the venue that’ll be showcasing a wide variety of underground dance music. UNIT closed for refurbishment after a massive “send off” night a couple of weeks ago on Saturday 15th. Since then the staff have been hard at work giving the place a freshen-up while making a few additional changes here and there.

The focus of the refurb has been on creating a fresh, exciting atmosphere for the club; with updated paintwork and trim, new bar and dancefloor lighting, and improved furniture. There are “a few surprises in the middle bar” (hint: Look out for the DIY photo-booth that’s being installed).

For those unfamiliar with the layout of UNIT: It has a large dance floor area and bar downstairs; a middle floor with a chillout area, outside smoking area, and bar (which will be serving a new range of cocktails); and a smaller upstairs dance floor with adjacent bar. There are a couple of extra features too, such as a small upstairs room soon to be available for private hire, and an additional smoking area just off the main dance floor downstairs.

UNIT is often thought of as an alternative music club. But, as in-house promoter Chris Stemp explains, there is much more to the venue:

We’ve always prided ourselves on giving people an alternative option, though this is mostly with regards to being an alternative option to venues in more well known areas such as Bedford Place and beyond as opposed to one that simply just plays alternative music.

This is where their new Friday nights come in, they’ll be focusing on underground dance music in one room, while keeping the whole night accessible with plenty of decent commercial club music in the other room. The entry and drinks prices will be kept low, and Lose Your Head will feature a whole host of Southampton DJs playing alongside semi-regular (i.e. bi-weekly) headliners. The first headliner will be New York Transit Authority on the 7th March, a week after the opening party.

However, as Chris also adds: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. To that end, Saturday nights will be continuing as normal, with plenty of alternative/rock/indie music being served up to their large and dedicated pool of regulars whilst local tattoos & piercings parlour Asgard will be supporting the night giving free entry wristbands to anyone who gives them a visit.

UNIT is no stranger to to experimental, forward-thinking, not-yet-mainstream, and underground music, with names such as Disclosure, Cashmere Cat, Ryan Hemsworth, and even the likes of Eillie Golding and Jessie J all making their Southampton (and even South-Coast) débuts at the club. Several of those names appeared under UNIT’s “MILK” brand, but now Lose Your Head will be carrying the baton, filling the void left by like-minded-but-no-longer-in-Southampton promoters No Logo, Boxed Sound, and Bang Bang.
