Situated in Bedford Place on the ground floor of 21 Lower Banister St, The Social is the latest addition to Southampton’s changing nightlife scene. In the recent past, the building now occupied by The Social was home to RoXX (upstairs) and Aura (downstairs) and for a very brief time Attik (upstairs) and Home (downstairs).
With a number of Southampton’s venues closing down or facing an uncertain future in recent months, the launch of a new venue is just what the city needs. The Social is a dive bar offering a laid back vibe with a distinct, stripped back aesthetic, exposed brickwork and well stocked bar, all arranged with a touch of contemporary style. Launching this weekend with a bespoke cocktail menu, a fine selection of craft beers, and a full food menu to follow, The Social has the potential to make a real impact.
Last weekend Southampton collective Emotive House put the venue through its paces hosting an unofficial after party for Common People Festival. Speaking to the Emotive, team they had some nice words to say about the new venue:
What a top night at The Social for our Common People after party. It proved to be the perfect choice of venue for Emotive – stylish design, a lovely atmosphere and fantastic Funktion-One sound system. We’ve had great feedback about the party and the venue, and we can’t wait to do plenty more nights there in the future.
This weekend sees the venue officially open its doors to all. We caught up with the bar’s manager Lewis, to find out a little more about what we can expect from The Social in the months to come.
Do you think The Social fills a gap/offers something that’s missing from Southampton’s nightlife?
Yes, massively. We are offering something that is miles ahead of the time in Southampton. A lot of the other venues and bars in the city are still doing the same thing they always have done, which we don’t want to do. We want to be the trendsetters!
What kind of music can we expect to hear at The Social week on week?
Throughout the week we will be offering a selection of live music, covering a broad range of genres and catering to a wide range of tastes. Funk, soul, and motown will be filling the Friday and Saturday slots.
Have you got any residencies confirmed?
We are in talks with a lot of different people which we will be revealing over the next couple of weeks!
Awesome night! Really good numbers through the door, soundtrack was awesome and the Emotive guys smashed it! Happy upbeat music throughout the evening and a solid dancefloor right up until the end. It was wicked to see the bar up and running, drinks flowing and people enjoying themselves, perfect night!
Have you got any more events in the pipeline that’d appeal to Sotonight’s readers?
Other than our launch weekender, we have got some extra little bits coming, including a full refurbishment and re launch of what used to be RoXX. Needless to say we are all excited about that!
You’re putting some real focus into the bar itself, can you tell us a little more about that?
Our friends at Orange Rooms hold the title of the best cocktails in the city and have done so for many years. But we’re planning on giving them a serious run for their money. Expect fire and real showmanship!
How does it feel to be launching at last?
Amazing. Nothing better than spending a lot of time and loads of hard graft and finally seeing the place come together and open up.
How would you sum up the Social in one sentence?
Southampton’s friendliest bar.
