This year, the University of Southampton, and Southampton Solent University’s student unions are once again collaborating with Dirty Box Promotions (DBP) to coordinate the social agendas of their incoming freshers. Using the promotion company’s contacts to pull in big names for the student audience is a surefire recipe for success, and this year they’ve secured a double dosage of MistaJam’s highly acclaimed Speakerbox brand. Speakerbox Presents featuring Jaguar Skills, MistaJam himself, Friends Within, and Isaac Christopher will be stopping off at Southampton for two back to back nights at Oceana on the 28th, and 29th September, the first allocated to Southampton Solent Freshers and the second to those of the University of Southampton. Students that have purchased wristbands as part of the Masterpass and AAA schemes will be able to attend for free on their university’s respective night.
Selected as Speakerbox’s headliner for the Freshers’ rave is Jaguar Skills. It won’t be Jaguar Skills’ first time in Southampton either, having headlined DBP’s Halloween multi-venue event last year, and many events prior to that. This shadowy DJ has managed to keep his true identity something of a mystery, performing at all his gigs clad in his statement ninja attire. Donning the ninja garb is indeed a bold move, suggesting extensive skill and vicious precision, something that Jaguar Skills has aplenty. Many of his fans will know he’s famed for a prolific output of mixes, mashing up the best of genre classics, with party favorites. Jaguar Skills is undeniable a great choice for a Freshers’ Week event; speeding through genres seamlessly and at breakneck speed, track after track after track.
MistaJam, real name Pete Dalton, has firmly established himself as a taste-maker, a staple on 1Xtra’s roster, and now at the forefront of the Radio1/1Xtra crossover, the Nottingham born DJ plays a diverse catalogue of the best urban music from house, to grime to DnB on his radio shows, five days a week. It’s thanks to Dalton’s work ethic that once landing his big break at 1Xtra in 2005, having been talent scouted playing at one of his own events, that he was able to quickly ascend to a peak slot on the broadcaster’s roster. The ability to gauge a scene and a crowd with such skill, has earned MistaJam the opportunity to curate lineups at some of the biggest festivals and events in the UK and abroad, bringing with him the Speakerbox brand to Glastonbury, Creamfields, Majorca, and Ibiza.
Also making an appearance is Liverpudlian DJ/producer, Friends Within, who’s enviable collaborations include tracks with Karma Kid and house giants Disclosure. Meanwhile, Isaac Christopher, has a number of releases on MistaJam’s very own Speakerbox label, after his Olympic table tennis prospects where shattered, pre Beijing, by a wrist injury, leaving him with ample time to perfect his production in the studio.
Tickets to the Speakerbox Freshers’ Rave are available as part of the AAA and Outgoing Masterpass wristband schemes. Individual tickets for the Solent event are also available.
