So this is actually the “SUB:MISSION Freshers Rave” which will possibly put a lot of people off (especially non-students, and probably 2nd/3rd/etc year students too, and maybe even some freshers?) … but just take a step back and ignore the name for a sec and consider these things:

  1. The lineup is most definitely not to be sniffed at. It caters very well to many tastes and levels of music interest.
  2. Once you’re there the fact that it’s a “freshers rave” becomes irrelevant because the bar is open and the music is decent.
  3. You don’t have to be a student to buy tickets, so there will be non-students.

It’s also worth mentioning that the tickets (see below) are available as part of the Southampton Solent University freshers pack and as standalone tickets.

All of the above means that this night is going to be busy. Very busy. It’s at Oceana though, so at least there’s a lot of space and the aircon is decent. The soundsystem’s not too shabby either.

Down to business: Headlining is Zane Lowe, who has a show on a little radio station called BBC Radio 1 or something. If you’ve ever caught a Zane Lowe show or DJ set then the chances are you know that his music tastes are pretty extensive. Everything from metal to hip-hop, via disco, indie, and glitchy electronic stuff. In recent years he has kept up with the “underground” trends and much of the loosely dubbed “bass music” stuff has found its way into his playlists and DJ sets. This goes some way to explain the choices of co-headliners and support DJs: Redlight, DJ Zinc, and Monki.

Here’s a fairly recent mix from him. It’s predominantly trap and r&b with some dnb towards the end. He’s got another mix on his SoundCloud page which is quite different so you can expect some variation. Also his radio shows tend to vary quite a lot, so don’t make up your mind after hearing just 10 minutes of one.

Next on the lineup is Redlight, a man of many aliases. Redlight is a Bristol raised, London based artist navigating the unnamed airspace between house, bass and beyond. His releases range from big-label top-1o singles involving huge collaborations to low print volume white labels under unconfirmed aliases put out via his own and friends’ record labels. Here’s a good example of his work from an Urban-Nerds NYE party:

Continuing with my excellent explanation regarding the choice of DJs on this night, I now present to you the reason that DJ Zinc is on the lineup:

Yup, DJ Zinc and Redlight go very well together indeed. Zinc is probably more well known for his work in the drum and bass arena but his recent stuff with Rinse FM shows he’s not tied down to the 170 end of things.

Our final headliner is Monki, another Rinse FM, Radio 1, and 1Xtra DJ. She actually played in Southampton before the summer and I reckon someone involved with making this lineup went along to that gig and saw good things. Good enough to put her next to the names we’ve been through already. Monki recently curated ten studio sessions at Red Bull Studios London to create the Monki & Friends EP, available as a free download. One glance at the people involved with that EP lets you know that Monki is on a steep upward trajectory, good things to come.
