Swoon is a Southampton-based collective on a mission to seek out and promote (and indeed produce) forward thinking music. Their excellent blog showcases all things musical from Southampton and beyond. Swoon prides itself in creating a platform for local talent to be put on display and, to this end, they’ve teamed up with CULT and SEMSU (The Society For Electronic Music at Southampton University) to put on a night filled with techno, house, garage and more at UNIT on Thursday 17th October.

They’re keeping entry costs low (£3 on the door, £2 if you bring a flyer) and have lined up a selection of decent drinks deals to help all those students save the pennies. What with all the guest DJs and Swoon residents, this is shaping up to be an excellent evening, especially for the bass music enthusiasts out there.
First on the lineup are up-and-coming duo South Royston who have played all over Southampton including at Junk for Bang Bang and CULT at Rhino. They’ve also supported DJ EZ at The Garden Party and Cashmere Cat at UNIT. Several of South Royston’s productions have found their way onto various well known YouTube channels after being played out on BBC Radio 1. Look out for their forthcoming release on Bang Bang.
Next: George Francis & JAKUZE. Between them this pair have played at pretty much the full round of nightclubs in Southampton and have recently been expanding their horizons with sets at Egg London and Fire in Bournemouth. One half (JAKUZE) is the man behind the successful HGR-MGR event series at Rhino & Junk.
Representing SEMSU will be newly-christened Sal Paradise. Naturally, what with SEMSU being what it is, there are a fair few DJs involved with the society. And, what with electronic music being what it is, those involved with the society have extensive and varied tastes spanning the entire spectrum and timeline of electronic music. That might give you some idea of what to expect from Sal Paradise …
Here’s what Swoon say about SEMSU: “SEMSU are a bunch of full on electronic music nerds (in the best sense) and as such have their fingers in pretty much every electronic pie in Southampton and their beady eyes most definitely on the pulse. Naturally, there are more than a few clued up DJ’s amongst them and so it is our pleasure to welcome SEMSU down for a set takeover! Expect an education in the finest bass music.”
As mentioned, CULT are involved with this night. As such, they’ll be supplying some of their finest selectors. CULT, of Winchester origin, have thrown some rather special parties in the last year or so and brought some of the best underground techno and deep house names down to our part of the country, including Liam Dee, Josh Butler, and Jesus Pablo.
Short & Manser will also be playing. As Swoon’s very own resident troublemakers, these two like to bring out the big guns rather than play it soft and will most definitely be smashing out some rather heavy bass from across the spectrum. Manser has recently brought out an excellent exclusive release through Swoon and there are some more coming very soon.
Finally we’ve got Makarii & Haoulin. Much like many of the DJs mentioned here, Makarii has also done the rounds in Southampton, playing for just about every decent underground brand available. He’ll be playing alongside Swoon’s founding father, Haoulin.
