Only a few weeks have passed since Orange Rooms kicked off their new Mixtape Fridays with DJ Krafty Kuts. The latest booking, Rinse FM resident Roska, is one of those rare DJ’s that can genuinely pull off playing vocal samples of their own name in their sets and production. In my opinion that is always a good sign.

The Roska sound is epitomized by plenty of bleeps, bubbles, horns and squeaks layered over hefty drum riddims; he fuses dubstep with UK funky, grime, garage and don’t be surprised if you hear some house too. Bursting out onto the scene in 2010 with one of his best tunes “Squark” (the name is onomatopoeic of the track) he became renowned for taking the once menacing dubstep sound and making it something that will make your face contort furiously between grinning euphoria and a bass face of your choice. Check out his recent “Shocking EP” released on Rinse FM’s label:
With fresh releases on Tectonic, the ever pioneering label in the 140bpm scene and No Brainer Records you can expect to hear some unique dubplates. Also expect to hear a lot of tunes from his very own label Roska’s Kicks And Snares which has featured releases from the likes of house legend Scuba, under his alias of Spectr.
The light-hearted name of his record label and pun infused recent release is an indicator of how much fun this guy has in what he does and this enthusiasm is always projected onto the dance floor. As an ex MC he is a master of crowd energy and somehow he has managed to transpose that skill on a microphone to the turntables. Expect in Roska’s set a journey through many genres but all with a cohesive core of his own genre transcending production and good vibes. Not many DJ’s can pull off dropping a remix of Lethal Bizzle’s “POW 2011” with a sublime house tune but Roska does it with ease and a smile on his face.
