Krept and Konan are certainly no strangers to venues filled to the rafters, after sharing the stage with the likes of Tinie Tempah, Gigs and Gfrsh earlier this year along with winning Best Newcomers at last month’s Mobos the duo are set to smash yet another set at Junk.
The pair met as teenagers and began rapping in early 2009. “Tsunami”, their debut mixtape was well received with around 2,000 sold and an estimated 60,000 illegal downloads. It wasn’t until a YouTube cover of Jay Z and Kanye West’s “Otis” surfaced in 2011 that the duo really got noticed for their rhyming talents. The cover went viral and received an incredible five million views in five days.
“Young Kingz” their latest Mixtape was released earlier this year and was received with outstanding success amongst industry heads and music fans alike. It slotted straight into the UK top 20. This achievement was personified even more as the duo had done hardly any promo across the airwaves or with visual content. Unlike other rap acts such as Rizzle Kicks who decided to introduce us to a plethora of promotional tricks, the south London rappers kept it quiet whilst keeping confidant. “A top 50 would have been good,” says Krept. “It was our first proper release for three years, so we just wanted people to like it,” adds Konan. “We didn’t expect it to go so … crazy.” [sic].
