Eastern Europe has been the home of some of the best electronic music festivals in the world for a while now with Outlook & Dimensions Festivals, EXIT Festival, and the recent addition of Horizon Festival. Horizon Festival finds its home on the snowy peaks of the Pirin mountains in Bulgaria. Taking place in March and being cheaper and easier to get to than other overseas festivals, it is an ideal way to spend 6 days of your ski season. Thanks to Raygun and Release we will be having a prime cut of the Horizon Festival line-up in Southampton (RoXX, 14th Feb) in order to showcase some of the plethora of musical talent available at the festival itself. I’m personally hoping RoXX ditch the smoke machines in favour of some snow machines just to give it that real music-festival-in-the-mountains vibe.

The lineup for the Horizon Festival 2014 Southampton Launch Party is as follows:
Matt Preston, AKA Phaeleh is renowned for his unique take on the original dubstep sound. With the music still characterised with that unmistakable 140bpm half-step beat and a healthy amount of sub bass but with expansive melodic soundscapes and often vocalists in the tracks. What is created is truly immersive music to throw your self into. With two albums under his belt and several EPs, singles and remixes he is an avid producer who utilises his musical talents on guitar and piano when producing his tracks. Phaeleh brings a very distinct sound to the genre by having these live instruments used alongside the usual samples.[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/17081403″ params=”color=ff6600&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]
Foreign Concept launched a career in drum and bass from his dark and memorable tune “Mob Justice” which was picked up by Critical head honcho Kasra. Since then he has been a bedrock in the Critical Music family and recently he has been pushing some really innovative and fresh sounds in the scene. His Tag Team EP and recent track on the Underground Sonics compilation are brilliant contributions to the new footwork influenced side of drum and bass that has emerged over the past year or so. Foreign Concept has aided the return of insane rhythms and percussion to the genre.[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/128499671″ params=”color=ff6600&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]
Barely Legal is a pioneering young talent based in London and is a great example of the musical melting pot that the capital is. Barely Legal blends garage, grime, UK funky and anything else that can’t quite be pinned down into a genre and falls under the heading of bass music. Her eclectic selection and rugged mixing creates an energy that is hard to rival. With shows on the BBC’s 1Xtra, Rinse FM, and Kiss FM she is an outstanding DJ and selector and recently attracted the attention of some of the big names in grime, Wiley, Scratchy and Riko Dan to be the DJ for an epic grime mix.[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/78074136″ params=”color=ff6600&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]
Other artists playing include the Southampton drum and bass legends Gerra & Stone, Joe Raygun as our resident MC for the night who recently featured on the new Uprise Audio compilation, and rising Southampton-based talents Depth and Levi Jules. All in all it’s going to be an amazing night with giants of each genre on the line-up there will be something for everybody.
