WAX hasn’t been around for the last year or so, so we’ll forgive you for being unfamiliar with the brand. Those who have been in Southampton for a bit long will of course know that WAX has been responsible for bringing many key players from the drum and bass and dubstep scenes to Southampton. Last year they hosted Coki, Alix Perez, Caspa, S.P.Y, Dub Phizix, and Friction … to name a few. All the way back in 2009 they threw parties with Benga, Loefah, and Commix (among others). 2010 saw everyone from Rusko and Plastician to Breakage and Nero while 2011 featured Danny Byrd, Logistics, Shy FX, dBridge and many more! In the past they’ve run nights at Rhino (and indeed Audio), before moving to Junk in 2011. Now they’ll be hosting a night at RoXX with a man who needs almost no introduction. But if you’re after one then here is a quickie:

Upon first coming across David Rodigan I found the scenes I saw quite surreal if not confusing. Watching a then younger (but still an older man for a DJ) Rodigan in his 9 to 5 buttoned shirt bouncing around and MCing with a Jamaican accent … you know what, just watch this if you haven’t already!

The man has got energy right! He’s also got one of the most encyclopedic knowledge’s of all things reggae, dub and ska. Starting out over thirty years ago he took to the Jamaican sounds quickly and absorbed the culture. Rodigan’s radio shows and sets have put this knowledge to work by educating his listeners and setting the stage for up and coming artists in the scene.

“For over 30 years David Rodigan has been the top dog in the ganja-scented, bass heavy-atmosphere of Britain’s reggae dance-halls.”

Rodigan MBE left Kiss 100 last year after he protested at the marginalization of Reggae, being pushed to a lonely hour at 1am. He now enjoys the suitably reggae friendly 2 hour slot of  7pm on Sundays, aired on 1XTRA.

At the ripe age of 62 he’s doing more shows than ever! His bookings have seen him working around the clock this year from Lovebox in London and now to RoXX in Southampton. He’s a DJ that doesn’t stop giving!  Built upon the ridiculous knowledge and status within the scene that demands respect accompanied by his selfless character to ensure the crowd has a good time carries his sets. The man is a legend.

Support will come from The Uplifter, Rocksteady, V Dubs, and Dub Concept.
