The city is split into nine distinct districts each with their own theme, stages and lineups. One minute you might find yourself in the lawless Wild West watching John Butler Trio at the Old Mines, the next in DSTRKT 5’s Spaceport club… The common theme that ties everything together is the organisers’ hedonistic love of the party and reggae, dub and roots culture, evident in TrenchTown that punctuates the district throughout the city!
As well as the main stages in each of the town districts, be sure to explore as many of the inner city mini venues as you can find yourself stumbling into. By day Chinatown’s Mr Hung’s Laundry will see his crew live screen printing and jamming out funky beats in his cosmic laundry, and by night they will be bringing the sonic fiya for our secret rinse out with Hungs residents and special guests taking you on a bass laced musical journey to cleanse the soul and keep you dancing to the early hours!
Another example of a gem of a micro venue is Samedia Shebeen, where jungle beats meet afrobeat, hi-life, cumbia and samba rhythms. Live drums and horns can be expected too, and plenty good vibes, so dip in your head and be immersed by a soundtrack that spans music from the tropical regions, both ancient and futuristi!
The organisers are paying good attention to audio quality this year too. Famed for their loud soundsystems and immersive audio, they’ve hired some of the UK’s leading experts in sound modelling and management to make sure noise doesn’t leak between stages and they can keep the volume cranked! Apparently there are going to be some big old stacks of hay bales to help with this!
So if you want to explore the weird and wonderful world of Boomtown Fair this year, grab yourself a ticket, jump on a bus and find your way to the dystopia hidden in the depths of the Hampshire countryside.
Zuri Aura are a new band that are already making wave outside of their native Devon that deserve your attention. They’re already touring the UK and europe they’ll bring you Soulful grooves and Skankin’ reggae with elements of Hip Hop, D&B and even Afro-Beat in the Hidden Woods stage on the Friday at Boomtown this year!
Gogol Bordello are a raucous gypsy punk band that are guaranteed to bring one of the most hilarious and energetic sets of all to Boomtown 2015. Their mad mix of punk, ska, dub and balkan beats will definitely get the whole crowd’s knees up for the finest skanking, curiously complemented by Hutz’s clownish antics and folk wisdom!
Matisyahu exemplifies the cultural mish-mash that is New York. He’s a hasidic Jewish vocalist and beatboxer that raps and sings with a live band, expect soaring powerful notes with solid reggae chop comping, spitting intelligent lyrics formed from his conscious views and activism.
