Bestival is a four-day music festival held at the Robin Hill country park on the Isle of Wight. It has been held annually in late summer since 2004. The event is organized by Rob da Bank along with his wife Josie and is an off-shoot of his Sunday Best record label and club night series. Bestival 2014 will feature music from OutKast, Foals, Chic (w/ Nile Rodgers), Beck, Disclosure, Major Lazer, Busta Rhymes, Paloma Faith, Basement Jaxx, London Grammar, and many more. DJs lined up to play across the weekend include Sven Väth, Annie Mac, Chase and Status, Andy C, Diplo, Eats Everything, Damian Lazarus, MK, Skream, Jackmaster, and Oneman.
Each year Bestival has a unique overarching theme. The 2014 theme follows on from the 2013 theme, that of HMS Bestival, which imagined the three-day event as a nautical adventure. After travelling through “the warm waters of the Arabian Gulf and docking in Asian ports, trading stories and treasures with Persian kings and medicine men” the HMS Bestival eventually landed on the Desert Island Disco, according to the Bestival website.
The Desert Island Disco Dancehall is an extension of the festival’s theme and will be serving as a taster for the dance-music-orientated parts of Bestival.
About the artists:
Rob da Bank: As the founder of Sunday Best Recordings he has been instrumental in creating one of the UK’s bravest and most eclectic independent record labels and as Bestival’s head honcho, alongside his co-pilot Josie, he has shown every festival on the planet exactly how it should be done. But these two major achievements are just a couple of feathers in the great man’s cap. As a DJ Rob is one of the world’s finest, possessing a limitlessly open minded attitude to music that he’s travelled the planet with, spreading the word that club music doesn’t have to just be a series of repetitive beats.
Joining Rob da Bank at Orange Rooms will be London based party starter DJ Martelo, who knows a thing or two about getting a crowd going. Anyone who has seen one of his sets or listened to any of his mixtapes will vouch for his deft mixing skills and his top notch tune selection. Joining them will be Southampton duo Pelo Rizardo, Cholombian (recently signed to Sunday Best sister label Silver Bear), Morgan Hislop, Orange Rooms resident Johni Parker, and Levi Jules.
