Junk announces first wave of acts for “Spill The Milk”, new Saturday night brand for 2015

Kicking off with Chris Lorenzo (of Hannah Wants fame) on Saturday the 10th January 2015, Spill The Milk is Junk’s new weekly clubnight. The Southampton nightclub has secured an excellent and varied selection of DJs to perform each week and the first ten of those were announced today. They are, in alphabetical order, as follows: Alexis Raphael, Ben Pearce (Sex Tape tour), Bicep, Chris Lorenzo, French Express (Jonas Rathsman & Isaac Tichauer), Moxie, Oneman, Richy Ahmed, Sampha, wAFF, and Yasmin (Rinse FM).

With a promise to “take your fun very seriously”, Junk’s new brand will aim to incorporate everything from house and disco, to electro, bass, and garage. In many ways, Spill The Milk is an amalgamation of the venue’s regular Saturday-night style at the house/techno end of the spectrum (à la Junk Love, WEAREJUNK, and dancetripp) with the ethos of their discontinued Bang Bang event series, which was geared towards the ever-evolving bass-orientated domain.

Given the current trends — both in the charts and in the underground scene — the move is a sensible one; the lines between the many genres of dance music are blurring and people’s tastes are evolving. Wind back a few years and the degrees of separation between the likes of Richy Ahmed, Oneman, and Sampha were many. But now, and probably even more so come 2015, they are fewer. Producers and DJs who were perhaps once more associated with the sounds of dubstep and drum and bass can now be found side by side with their compatriots from the deep house and disco sound pools, featured together on club and festival lineups around the world. Likewise, well-established names — and indeed new names — from the house and techno scenes and record labels are drawing influences from a much broader range of musical styles.

Spill The Milk will continue this trend, switching between Hot Creations staples, figureheads of garage and bass, and upcoming Rinse FM stars.

So far, the only two dates confirmed are the 10th January (launch night with Chris Lorenzo) and the 28th February with Ben pearce (as part of his UK tour). The lineups for the remaining Saturdays, stretching from January through to the end of March, will be revealed next week. Tickets for the opening event go on sale this Monday (22nd December) at 6pm.

This announcement is billed as ‘phase one’, so we can expect another announcement soon, most likely in the new year.
